What is podcasting?

Podcasting has become one of the major internet buzzwords over the last couple of years, but what exactly is a podcast?

The term originated in 2003 when Apple opened their iTunes online music store, allowing users to offer their own radio shows for users to download to listen to on their iPods. This led to a rush of people producing their own audio content and offering it online, and the name podcast stuck.

Nowadays a podcast is simply a piece of audio that is offered online for users to download and listen to at their leisure. Usually this is provided in the form of a link, or feed, to a particular show or series of podcasts, which the user's preferred choice of podcast software can use to retrieve a particular show, or automatically download new podcasts as they are broadcast.

Just as radio covers everything from audio books to gangster rap, there are podcasts on every topic under the sun. Whether it's financial reports, daily news, country music or Star Trek, there are podcasts out there devoted to them.

Usually 5-10 minutes long (though they can be any length), these shows are syndicated so that different sites can link to the same show and users can forward the quality content to their friends quickly and easily.

Podcasting provides a quick and easy way for anyone from the corporate CEO to the grandmother handing out cookie recipes to broadcast audio quickly and easily, and the potential benefits for business from the craze are huge.
