What is SEO and how does it work?
Every internet search engine has the same mission: Give the searcher a list of sites that may hold the information they're looking for, with the most probable best link at the top of the list.Every website owner has the same mission: Get my site to the top of the list for the sort of things my customers will be typing into search engines.
The trouble is, search engines operate with automated 'robots' and thus use increasingly sophisticated artificial intelligence to decide whether a page is relevant for a particular query or not.
Search Engine Optimisation is the process of making sure a website is doing everything it can to be correctly categorised and logged by the search engine, so that everything possible has been done to maximise the chances of a site coming higher in the results than its competitors.
There are three main types of SEO:
- structural changes: These include making sure a site is easily readable and accessible to search engine robots. Many sites, whether they're locked in frames or totally Flash based, make it hard for the search engines to tell what they are all about. SEO changes this, ensuring the search engines have the easiest possible time when they visit your site to categorise it.
- external changes: These include setting up external links, nurturing relationships to increase in-bound links to your site and creating content that increases the chances of both the search engines and other webmasters linking to your site.
- paid listings: Most search engines offer paid placements, known as CPC (cost-per-click) where you can pay for everything from priority submission and categorisation, to being the top result for a certain key word searched for. Sites like Google AdWords allow you to pay as much as you can afford to ensure your site is at the top of a page of search results for your preferred term.
